i MiEV

As a tool for transportation automobiles are an indispensable element of our rich and varied modern lifestyles. Video

However they also have a significant impact on the environment throughout all stages of their lifecycles. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation makes continuous efforts to reduce the environmental impact of it's products. Environmental problems that vehicle manufacturers have to resolve include the prevention of pollution, and reducing dependence on petroleum.

The i MiEV is a zero-emissions vehicle. Even when taking into account CO2 emissions at the power plants that generate the power needed for charging the car, it emits only approximately 30% of the CO2 of a gasoline minicar.

Benefits of EVs

Electric motors are mechanically very simple and release no air pollutants whatsoever. Their mechanical simplicity substantially reduces the need for vehicle maintenance.

  • EVs create substantially less vibration and noise than petrol-powered vehicles
  • Drivers gain an improved driving experience; a battery-powered electric vehicle typically has far greater torque than an equivalent petrol-powered vehicle
  • Greater torque yields stronger acceleration for a highly responsive and enjoyable driving experience.
  • EVs have a highly efficient wheel-to-wheel cycle when compared to petrol-powered vehicles.

Challenges of EVs

  • The limited range of battery-powered vehicles compared to their petrol-powered counterparts means EVs will initially not be suitable for long-distance driving
  • Initially, there will be a relatively high purchase price applied to EVs, as occurs with any other new technology
